Lorie Cantu, San Angelo Cultural Affairs Council executive director, announced Thursday that she will resign her post at year's end.
Cantu began her two-year tenure working for the council in late February 2006.Although her formal resignation date is Dec. 31, Cantu said she plans to stay with the organization in a volunteer capacity.
She also has offered to help train her replacement through the beginning of 2008, if that person should request her help.
"The organization has such momentum going that I want to ensure a smooth transition," she said.
SACAC is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote awareness of the arts in San Angelo and the Concho Valley.The council has 20 members including the executive director.
The executive director of SACAC is a multifaceted position, Cantu said.Typical duties include event planning, fundraising, board development and community relations.
President Sarah Gossett, said SACAC will miss having Cantu on board and noted that she will be difficult to replace.Cantu has opened up doors for the SACAC, Gossett said, which has in turn allowed the council to better serve San Angelo's arts and cultural organizations.

"She's one in a million," Gossett said of Cantu.

Cantu said she has enjoyed her time with the organization.
"Working at SACAC has been one of the greatest experiences that I've ever had," she said.

Of her accomplishments as executive director, Cantu said she is proud of helping pull together the board of directors to strengthen the foundation of the organization.She also has enjoyed the opportunity to be a part of San Angelo's arts community.
"It's been very enlightening," she said, "to discover just how culturally diverse San Angelo is."
