House Economic Development Chairman Sam Cann, D-Harrison, said it's obvious that the Workers' Comp Division has never been run like a true insurance business. He said everyone must quit treating it like a secondary welfare program providing some people with income they may not truly deserve.
When asked whether that means tighter regulations on workers' comp benefits, Cann replied that he's not sure because "there is no simple answer how to do that," but everyone is responsible for solving the problem. He said he's encouraged that administrative reforms being implemented by Workers' Comp Executive Director Dale Newell will help.
Gov. Bob Wise is also expected to give lawmakers proposed reform legislation Wednesday during his State of the State address.
