AVON PARK - Homegrown musician 18-year-old Michelle Cann will be featured this weekend on a national radio program spotlighting young classical artists.
Cann, a 12-year resident of Highlands County, graduated with a high school diploma in 2005 after home schooling and taking dual-enrollment courses at South Florida Community College.
She has completed her freshman year at the Cleveland Institute of Music, where she was one of three students chosen to be a Master Class Fellow at the Gilmore International Keyboard Festival.
For the taping of the radio program, Cann performed solo on the piano, played violin in a skit and was interviewed before an audience in March in Fort Myers.

"I'm more into the performance side of it because it has always been exciting for me," Cann said.
Cann entered and won many competitions throughout her career including the Florida State Music Teachers Association district competitions and The Florida Orchestra Senior Division Young Artist competition.
Cann practices four hours a day and wants to expand her musical range by taking jazz lessons.
"I enjoy jazz a lot and I think there is actually a correlation with classical music and jazz," she said. "Some people disagree."
Cann plans to enter more competitions and pursue more opportunities to perform so that ultimately she will be asked to perform.
