Mrs. Esther "Tess" Canja was elected as Vice President of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) at the 1996 Biennial Convention and succeeded automatically to President-elect in 1998. In addition to her responsibilities as President, Mrs. Canja serves on the Board Governance Committee, chairs the Executive Director Search Committee, and continues to serve on the Convention Program Committee. Prior to her election as President of AARP, Mrs. Canja chaired a special Governor's Task Force in 1990 to explore the establishment of a Department of Elder Affairs in Florida. Upon creation of the department, she was appointed chair of the department's Advisory Council. By gubernatorial appointments, Mrs. Canja served on the Michigan Statewide Health Coordinating Council and the Florida State Long-Term Care Ombudsman Council. She also was a board member of the Area Agency on Aging of South Central Florida and a founding member of Quality Care Advocates, Inc. a support group for residents of long-term care facilities and their families in Florida.
