   Tom Clanin, a communications and journalism professor at California State University-Fullerton, and president of the SPJ chapter representing the Greater Los Angeles area, says that in his career as a working journalist he was fingerprinted by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and the Orange County Sheriff's Department. "I've never heard anybody complain about it," Clanin says. "I've never heard anybody denied credentials. It's never been an issue."
   
   Clanin says that he brought the issue up to his board members a couple of months ago after hearing that journalists in Chicago were upset. "Everyone just kind of shrugged," he says. "Maybe we've given up our rights so long ago, we take it for granted."
   
   Last December, the Omaha Police Department backed down on a plan to fingerprint reporters and conduct background checks amidst complaints that the plan amounted to the licensing of journalists. The department was also assured by many news organizations that they did their own criminal checks on their employees.
