Beverly Canin, acting president of Breast Cancer Options, a not-for-profit breast cancer advocacy organization, helps other women cope with cancer. She serves as an advocate, attending doctor visits with newly diagnosed patients, taking notes and asking questions the patient may not think of or remember.
"Everybody has to make her own choice," Canin said. "They (women with cancer) have had all kinds of experiences. You just need to start considering that for yourself."
Canin said she knows how difficult having breast cancer can be. Diagnosed four years ago, Canin has survived two types of cancer and undergone both a lumpectomy and a bilateral mastectomy.
"We find it so important to educate people what their options are," she said.
...
"Many women don't know breast surgeons even exist," Canin said.
...
While willing to talk about her experience, Canin says her situation was unique. She, for example, never underwent chemotherapy or radiation, despite her doctor's recommendations.
"I've never felt sick," she said. "I didn't want to feel sick."
But, Canin was older, she said, which made a difference.
"I don't know what I would have done if I was in my 20s or 30s," she said. "Mine was caught early."
Canin applied that same feeling to her decision to have the double mastectomy.
"I decided I didn't want to whittle away at my breasts," she said. But she said she understands that it may be a more difficult decision for others. -
