Robert Caniglia
...
At St. Mary's Catholic Church on 58th Street in east Sacramento, there is a peaceful courtyard where Robert Caniglia donated his skills as a stone layer.
In the center, he built a koi pond where a statue of Mary, surrounded by flowers, watches over the fish. In another corner, he built a planter in front of a crucifix and a brick wall where people can sit.
When Mr. Caniglia, a Sacramento resident, died last Friday at age 61 from non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, he left a bit of himself in that courtyard, friends and family said.

"Bob's love for the church and his work is evident everywhere here."
Mr. Caniglia's projects at St. Mary's reflected the type of man he was, said his friends.

For 30 years, Mr. Caniglia worked with blocks of brick, stone and rock, contributing to projects throughout Northern California. In the Sacramento area, he worked mainly on commercial projects, including the federal courthouse, Raley Field and the state Capitol renovation.
Born in Omaha, Neb., Mr. Caniglia moved to Oakland for a couple of years before he returned to Nebraska at age 11 and went to live at Boys Town, the famous youth home in Omaha. It was a positive experience that he talked about throughout his life, said Monica Caniglia, his wife of 30 years.
"He loved Boys Town," she said.
