NYPD Capt. Frank Cangarella
...
With a crowd of about 30 Bensonhurst residents looking on, new NYPD 62 Precinct Commander Captain Frank Cangarella strolled into the room in full uniform. For much of the next hour, Cangarella stood upright at the front of the room at Seth Low IS 96, fielding a variety of questions and concerns from the crowd.
Cangarella, the former executive officer of the 60th Precinct, was recently named the new commanding officer for the 62nd Precinct, which covers commercial districts like Caesar,s Bay and the 86th Street and 18th Avenue shopping strips.
In an effort to foster a good relationship between the neighborhood and precinct he now commands, Cangarella, a Bensonhurst native, met with these residents to personally hear their problems and concerns, and attempt to offer solutions.
,My biggest goal is to open the door to the community,, Cangarella told residents during the Bensonhurst West End Community Council meeting. ,If there,s ever any problem , even a minor one , we,d like you to tell us so we can solve it before it becomes a major problem.,
Many people took the opportunity to inform Cangarella of problems in their neighborhoods. A woman who lives on 78th Street between 20th and 21st avenues was outspoken about her disdain for a group of Mexican immigrants who, according to her, have been drinking and urinating publicly along that street, as well as using foul language towards the younger children on the block.
In keeping with his theme of communication between the community and the Police Department, Cangarella urged the woman, and others who may be experiencing similar problems or issues of their own, to make use of the city,s array of resources. Quality of life abuses may be phoned into 311.
,The city,s 311 system is working very well,, he said. ,It is for non-priority problems and if and we encourage (people) to call it.,
Cangarella described annoyances like the situation on 78th Street as one of the main issues he will deal with as commanding officer. One of his main goals will be to improve the quality of life in the precinct as much as possible, he said.
