   Get a first-hand account of the Mars Odyssey Mission timeline and journey to the fourth planet from Dr. Laureano Cangahuala of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory on Monday , April 23 when he delivers Mars Odyssey : Improving Our Understanding of the Red Planet..
   
   The talk will begin at 1 p.m. in the Raccoon Mountain Room of the UTC University Center.
   
   Earlier this month , NASA continued its exploration of Mars with the launch of the Odyssey. The spacecraft will carry a suite of three scientific instruments to study the Martian environment while in orbit around the Red Planet. A thermal emission imaging system will map the planet with high-resolution images , helping scientists understand how the planet's mineralogy relates to the landforms.

   Cangahuala earned two bachelor's degrees , a master's degree and a doctorate from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He joined the Jet Propulsion Laboratory ( JPL ) in 1992 and has worked on navigation for projects such as Mars Observer , TOPEX/Poseidon , and Ulysses.
   
   As Navigation Technology Work Area Manager , he led the development of software for automated radio metric data validation and orbit determination. Cangahuala is currently the Tracking and Navigation Systems Services Manager at JPL. His interests include running and soaring , and he is an active member of the MIT Educational Council.
   
   This will be Al's third talk at UTC in 4 years , according to UTC adjunct physics instructor Li-Hwa Huang , Cangahuala's mother-in-law. This event is free and open to the public.
