Marie S. Canfield
A funeral Mass was held on Tuesday Feb. 12, at St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church South for Marie S. Canfield who died on Feb. 8, 2002 at Lasata Care Center at the age of 83. Burial followed the Mass at St. Francis Borgia Catholic Cemetery.
Mrs. Canfield was born on Jan. 9, 1919 in Cedarburg the daughter of the late Frederick and Mary (nee Becker) Wiesler. She married Harry Canfield on Oct. 11, 1941. Marie is a graduate of Spencerian Business College. While raising six children and often working as a bookkeeper, she was always involved in bettering our community. She helped to form, in Cedarburg; the first school for Ozaukee County's mentally retarded children. This then became, and she was a founding board member of, Portal Industries sheltered workshop in Grafton. For blind people, she converted popular books by typing them on a Braille typewriter. For years she volunteered at the Laubach Literacy Center helping people to learn to read. She volunteered and was a past director of Wisconsin Right to Life. In her 50s Marie and her husband Harry took up the sport of golf.
