He has practiced law in the areas of probate, real estate and appellate practice. In 1975 he established his own firm and became primarily involved with trial work and in 1978 he incorporated. Since then, Mr. Canel has practiced as a trial lawyer with particular expertise in the areas of neonatal and perinatal medicine representing plaintiffs in medical malpractice cases. His special area of interest is representation of families whose children have suffered birth injuries. He has been successful both in the trial and appellate courts of Illinois as evidenced by his multiple multi-million dollar verdicts and settlements.

He is also a member of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, the Chicago Bar and Illinois State Bar Associations.
Martindale Hubbell American Law Directory has given James H. Canel the "Highest Rating for Legal Ability and General Recommendation". As early as 1985, he was recognized in Town and Country Magazine, a national publication, in their survey of personal injury, malpractice and product liability lawyers. "Jim is truly an exceptional trial attorney, his past verdicts and settlements are quite impressive," said Patrick A. Salvi.
