But another disappointing crowd, estimated at 400, didn't leave RiverHawks owner John Candlish with much optimism for bringing the team back next year.
    ...
"I didn't see it (ray of hope) tonight," Candlish said. "The support has been good from the 400 or 500 that have been loyal to us, but that isn't enough. There is a remote possibility we will be here next year, but I don't know."

Candlish said he is in negotiations with an existing NIFL franchise that also has rights to a second team that is not currently active. If a deal is made, he could potentially own three teams next year.

As for the fate of the RiverHawks, that remains uncertain.

"We might leave the team here," Candlish said.

RiverHawks' owner John Candlish has said a crowd of 3,000 or so in the RiverHawks final home game June 20 might convince him to look at keeping the team in Knoxville.

He said he expects to lose about $200,000 this year and is considering other NIFL opportunities.

"I think that we're probably going to wait until after the Florence game to make a final decision," Candlish said.

Candlish said there are several possible scenarios, including leaving the team in Knoxville and purchasing another team to play in Laredo, Florence or one of the other cities courting the owner.

"Then there's a chance that we'll move the team and do a second team elsewhere," he said.
    ...
"Primarily the reason we're looking to move is we feel like there's just not enough local support here in Knoxville to sustain an NIFL team," Candlish said.

It's a compliment to the University of Tennessee, he said.

"They do such a great job ... there's not a lot of corporate sponsorship dollars available," Candlish said.

"We're excited to come over there and play a game," Candlish said.
