    Mark Candlin

Mark was born in 1962 and has lived in Surrey all his life. His studies at Epsom School of Art and Design served to increase his passion for art and feed his individualistic approach:

Art colleges in the late '70's were a hot bed of creativity, there were no real constraints levied on the students and you were encouraged to pursue your own agenda and style, happy days!

After leaving college Mark worked in advertising as a designer and illustrator, but the industry's constraints on his creativity eventually became too frustrating. It was at this time that he developed an interest in decorative and traditional folk art, which led to a series of commissions in murals, trompe l'oiel and sign writing. Mark's latest work is an exciting exploration of the nature of light at a particle level, which translates into intelligible abstract portraits of colour. As Mark explains:

I am fascinated by all these countless light particles bouncing around defining the world around us. In a subject I try to see past shape and form to concentrate on an alternative perception of pure colour.

Mark transfers an image, for example of a poppy or a crocus, onto a computer and zooms in until he gets to the pixels. These are the blocks of colour, which from a distance merge to create the 'pure' colour that the naked eye observes. In doing this Mark exposes the wonderfully vivid diversity at the heart of colour, and treats us to an incredibly intimate view of the world around us. He paints these pixellated pictures on block canvases, using acrylic paints and glazes to create textured and luminous works of astounding colour and harmony. He takes inspiration from Seurat, Picasso, Ad Reinhardt, Mark Rothko and Fernand Leger, and combines a brilliant fusion of contemporary technology and scientific understanding with his art. In doing this he fulfills one of the most enduring and passionate artistic drives and desires: to understand, capture and create colour.
