   NAMI -Mass is thrilled that after years of dogged work and advocacy, we and the Massachusetts Human Services providers scored a major victory today with unanimous passage of S 2467 ( formerly S65 ) . The bill , first proposed by Senator Gale Candaras, will require the Commonwealth to establish a rate setting mechanism to determine fair and adequate rates for the provision of community services for Commonwealth citizens with disabilities.

   Ø Senator Candaras represents constituents in the 1st Hampden and Hampshire District consisting of Springfield, ward 2, ward 5, precincts C to H, inclusive, wards 7 and 8; East Longmeadow; Hampden; Longmeadow; Ludlow; Wilbraham; Belchertown, precincts B and C; and Granby.
   
   Ø Prior to her election to the Massachusetts State Senate for the 2007-2008 term, Senator Candaras served five consecutive terms, from 1997 through 2006, as State Representative for the 12th Hampden District, the largest district in the state.
   
   Ø Senator Candaras' service in the House included the Committees on the Judiciary, Government Regulations, Public Service, Ethics and Personnel.Senator Candaras was first in her legislative class of 1997 to be promoted to leadership, serving first as Vice Chair of the Joint Committee on Public Service, then as Chair of the House Committee on Ethics and, for the past two terms as a Division Leader.She chaired the State-Wide Committee on the Adequacy and Allocation of Court Funding and is currently the Chair of the State Task Force on Cervical Cancer.
   
   Ø Senator Candaras also served in municipal government in her home town of Wilbraham, Massachusetts, She was appointed to the Finance Committee and Planning Board and elected to three consecutive terms on the Board of Selectmen.Her experience in local government provided her with valuable insights into the issues facing the cities and towns she serves.She served on the Wilbraham Board of Selectmen from May, 1989, to December 31, 1996, and is only the second woman ever to serve on the Wilbraham Select Board in the Town's 250 year history.She was elected Chairman of the Board of Selectmen twice.
