Mr. Canavan was awarded an honorary doctorate of engineering in 1986.In 1996, he received the Stevens Institute of Technology Honor Award from the university and the Stevens Alumni Association.The Canavan Arena in the Charles V. Schaefer Athletic and Recreation Center was dedicated in his honor.He was vice chairman of the Stevens Board of Trustees and chairman of the university's development and trusteeship committees.
Mr. Canavan began his career with Union Carbide as a technical representative with its Bakelite Division and held several management positions in manufacturing, technical and marketing before his appointment as executive vice president of the Fibers and Fabrics Division in 1964.
In 1973, Mr. Canavan was named president of the Olin Chemicals Group after serving as president of Stanwood Industries.
He served as operating executive for Hillside Capital, a group of private investors, first as president and chief executive officer of Buffalo Color and later as president and chief executive officer of Teepak.
After retiring from Teepak in 1988, Mr. Canavan was chief executive officer and chairman at Congoleum.He oversaw the 1993 merger of Amtico Corp. and Congoleum before retiring in 1994.
He was a member of the Woodway Country Club in Darien, Pine Valley Golf Club in Clementon, N.J., and the Jonathans Landing Club in Jupiter.
Mr. Canavan is survived by his wife, Isabelle Clarke Canavan ; two sons, William J. Canavan III of Huntington, N.Y., and Peter Canavan of Jupiter ; two daughters, Nancy Canavan Tomlinson of Sunapee, N.H., and Elizabeth Canavan McCaskey of Fairfield ; and five granddaughters.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 25, at St. Aloysius Church, 40 Maple St., New Canaan.Burial is private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The American Cancer Society or the Stevens Institute of Technology.
