There are eight others on the board from both the Republic and the North: Sr Martina Barrett is a trained psychologist; Aidan Canavan, a solicitor, was member of the Parades Commission for Northern Ireland; Brian D Matthews, solicitor, has served for 10 years as a member of the Child Protection Task Force of the Conference of Religious of Ireland; Fr Paul McCafferty is moderator of the diocesan curia for the diocese of Derry and is a canon lawyer; Rosaleen McElvaney, a clinical psychologist, served on the committee to advise the Bishops' Conference on matters relating to the Laffoy commission; John Morgan, corporate lawyer, served as chairman of the Bishops' Committee on Child Protection from 2002 to 2006; Jean Pound, a school principal from Clare, has worked in an advisory capacity with the Department of Education and Science; Michael Ringrose is chief executive of People with Disabilities in Ireland.

Mr Aiden Canavan is a senior partner in a Belfast law firm.He was president of the Law Society in 1995 and is involved in several community development projects in West Belfast.

Barrister Rose-Ann McCormick was a member of the Police Authority for six years; solicitor Aidan Canavan, an ex-SDLP man, acts for the RUC Federation and represented relatives of the British intelligence agents killed in the Chinook helicopter crash.

It is understood that the Commission approached SDLP members but was rebuffed.Similarly the Irish government could find no nationalists willing to put their names forward.The Commission offers members an annual salary of over £IR30,000 to tempt them to take on the job.

The appointments were criticised by the SDLP's Brid Rodgers, whose brief includes assisting the Irish government to select suitable nominees for Quango's.

They are Tommy Cheevers, a member of the Apprentice Boys; Glen Barr, former senior member of the now illegal Ulster Defense Association, directly connected to scores of murders; Rose-Anne McCormick, former member of the RUC Police Authority and Aiden Canavan, former president of the Law Society.
