   Eugene Canales, owner of Ferrari Tractor CIE, Gridley, Calif., has benefited from the focus on large-scale producers by the major agricultural equipment makers. His company has specialized in implements and tractors geared to small-scale operations since the late 80s. He's sold equipment from Hawaii to Puerto Rico and Alaska to Mexico. His equipment is designed for the European agriculture model, particularly that of Italy, which mirrors Canadian and U.S. small-scale operations.
   
   "I exist because these customers are not the type traditional dealers are used to," Canales explains. "They are often completely new to agriculture and typically very young. They often lack a clear idea of what they'll need to do what it is they want to do."
   
   Canales says the prime U.S. market for small farm and lifestyle equipment sales is like an upside down horseshoe, going up the West Coast, across to Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan, then down the East Coast.
