Canady joined government in 1987 as an attorney and policy analyst for the Michigan State Senate in the areas of local government and taxation.He was appointed Senate Democratic Counsel in 1989, where he served as the chief legal counsel and parliamentarian for the Senate Democratic Caucus.He advised the caucus on all legal matters as well as Senate Rules, parliamentary procedure, campaign finance and election law.He also represented the Democratic Caucus during redistricting litigation before the Michigan Supreme Court in 1992.In 1998, Canady was given the title of Deputy Chief of Staff by then Senate Democratic Leader John Cherry.

Prior to working in the government, Canady was in private practice in Lansing, specializing in litigation within State and Federal Courts.

Over the last year, Clark Hill has added several members to the Government Group including Alan Canady, former chief of Staff for House Minority Leader Dianne Byrum, Denise Ilitch, President of Ilitch Enterprises, Paul F.
