Ouida Canaday was one of the most prominent artists of the south. She was a winner of the Governor's Award and founder of the Artist's Atelier of Atlanta, gallery and studios. Among her honors was the Neighborhood Arts Center Award for Selfless Devotion Service. Governor Carl Sanders named her to the Georgia Art Commission in 1966.
Ouida was one of the founders and past presidents of The Piedmont Arts Festival of Atlanta and the Artists Associates Gallery. She was an International portrait artist and major award winning painter whose varied works may be seen in major corporate and private collections. Her paintings are mainly oil on canvas, acrylic and some mixed media.
A native of Lake Whales, Florida, she attended the Ringing School of Art and Georgia State University. A prominent and highly respected teacher of many of Atlanta's accomplished artists. The Artist's Atelier of Atlanta has working studio's with more than 30 artists working and displaying there. For more than 10 years this facility has dynamically contributed to the art scene in Atlanta fulfilling Ouida's lifelong dream. An enthusiastic traveler, Ouida took many friends along with her to a variety of exotic countries around the world. These travels and experiences were an inspiration for her and her fellow artists. To her, people were more important than things and no one who met her was left untouched.
Ouida was involved in so many organizations, committees, major art shows throughout the southeast and had influenced so many people, it would be impossible to list all her accomplishments. She passed away in 1994, but her teaching lives on. She made a two volume Basic Art Video that can be purchased upon request.
