Lieutenant Colonel Don Canaday Doing It Right
...
Lieutenant Colonel Don Canaday always wanted to fly. In the early 1980s, after flying with several friends, he decided it was time to fulfill his dream. His wife, Barbara, encouraged him, "If you're going to do that, why don't you do it right?" At his wife's urging, Don signed up for a flying course at the University of North Alabama. He bought his first plane before finishing the course and, in 1985, he earned his pilot's license. Shortly after that, Don put his passion for flying to good use by joining the Civil Air Patrol (CAP). He served 11 years as a Squadron Commander and, 21 years later, he's still a member and strong supporter of the organization.
...
"Flying is very unforgiving, so it's great when you can find somebody who is still alive," says Don. Nationally, CAP volunteers rescue almost 100 people each year.
While the missions are serious and sometimes sad, CAP volunteers enjoy many hours of flying at no cost to them, opportunities to advance in rank and the satisfaction of serving their country and individual communities. And according to Don, CAP is also a great way to meet new people and share your love of aviation. -

Donald Canaday, commander of the area's Civil Air Patrol Squadron. "At one time, the program at Muscle Shoals was one of the tops in the state. Over the years, however, the interest just diminished."
He said there are similar cadet programs in Huntsville and Savannah, Tenn.
Russellville's program is only 4 weeks old, and there are already 16 students involved, said 2nd Lt.
...
"It's enticing for the kids to be around the planes," said Canaday. "Each one of them will get to ride in the plane up to 10 times, and they will get a real feel for flying.
"Once the plane has taken off, the cadets will get to actually fly the plane. They will have to maintain altitude and hold to a certain course."
...
I told him it wouldn't be fair for him to join the senior program, and that we didn't have a cadet program right now," Canaday said.
...
Canaday said college scholarships to the Air Force Academy are also available through the program.
...
Canaday, who has been a member of the Civil Air Patrol since 1987, summed up the performance of the cadet program saying, "It's taken off, and I hope it continues to fly high."
