"Most of the stuff on the market, regardless of the (SPF) number, does not really block the full spectrum of ultraviolet A light, which is pretty dangerous light," said Dr. Anthony G. Campo, a Somers Point dermatologist who is on the staff of Shore Memorial Hospital and AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center.

Ultraviolet B rays burn the skin, but the UVA rays penetrate more deeply and cause genetic damage, Campo said.
    ...
Going for the higher numbers is a good idea, Campo said. There's a myth floating around in the media that SPF is not really a factor in sun protection, and that is false.

SPF, or sun protection factor, is supposed to be a measure of how long users can stay out in the sun without burning. Theoretically, SPF 30 users can stay out twice as long as SPF 15 users without suffering any ill effects, but studies show that isn't the case, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Web site.

The FDA is considering changing the requirements for labeling sunscreens to make them more easily understood by the public, Campo said.

The oft-quoted study that found SPF 15 to block as many rays as SPF 45 was conducted under artificial light in a laboratory, and the researchers used only visual examination to determine the level of burning, Campo said. When other experimenters exposed subjects to real sunlight and used microscopes to check for cellular damage, they found the higher SPF preparations did offer more protection.

When shopping for sunscreen, look for a product that blocks a wide spectrum of UVA rays, Campo said. Sunscreens containing Parsol are a good bet. Most sunscreens are good at blocking UBV rays.

Parents should be warned that children who get even one or two bad sunburns on a large portion of their bodies before age 10 are 21/2 times as likely to die of skin cancer than youngsters who don't get such a burn, Campo said.
    ...
Put the sunscreen on anyway, Campo said.

Need proof that you need it? Look at a part of your body that's never exposed to the sun, such as your belly or your buttocks, and compare the skin to that on your face, hands and forearms, Campo suggested. You'll notice the difference immediately.

If the threat of skin cancer doesn't scare you, think of how you'll look and feel at age 50. In addition to smoking, too much sun exposure is one sure way to make yourself look old before your time, Campo said.
    ...
The best way to avoid sun damage is to stay inside between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun's rays are 10 times as powerful as they are earlier or later in the day, Campo said. That sounds hard to do during summers at the shore, but you can still have a lot of fun.

A typical Saturday in his family might include water skiing in the early morning, followed by an indoor game of tennis and lunch, and riding a personal watercraft later in the afternoon, Campo said. If you get up early, you can spend 8 hours a day outdoors and still save your skin.

"Why be stupid about this?" Campo said.
