If you've got some views on this, Marie Campion is with the Institute of Chartered Accountants and joins us. Marie, how are you?

Campion: Good morning, James, how are you?
    ...
Campion: Because we wanted the public out there to know that there are two accounting bodies, there are two designations, and they are different, and people have a choice.
    ...
Campion: Well, the three main differences, James, that we have highlighted in the recent advertising campaign basically revolve around the training that chartered accountants undertake before they become chartered accountants, and that qualification confers a graduate diploma, whereas the CPA qualification does not.
    ...
Campion: Well, there's always a choice out there, and we've highlighted that the training that chartered accountants undertake is of the highest standard, and that is accredited by the Australian qualifications framework where they offer or provide people who did the CA program a graduate diploma, and that, you know, that has to meet strict criteria in order to give people that certificate.
    ...
Campion: No, quite the contrary. We've had steady growth for the last, you know, ongoing years, and this is really about differentiation. It's about - there was some confusion in the market place that, you know, the great unwashed out there thought that there was only one accounting body or there's only one choice, and in any category it's good to know that you have more than one choice, and you know, people can choose. So we wanted to go out there and communicate that there are two and they are different.

Valentine: Talking to Marie Campion from the Institute of Chartered Accountants.
    ...
Certainly our view is that both CPAs and CAs are the better trained, and I think as Marie said, there is choice.
    ...
We were discussing the fact that the Institute of Chartered Accountants have been taking out a television ad to extol their virtues, and as Marie said, to try and educate people there is a difference.
    ...
Marie Campion's from the Institute of Chartered Accountants. Marie, I'd have to say that we've had a lot of calls about your use of the term, we want to tell ‘the great unwashed' about the difference between the two groups. Are you with us, Marie?
    ...
Campion: Well, I suppose we have research to tell us that, you know, people don't know the difference, and you know -
    ...
Campion: Well, I think in any category, I mean it's like saying that cars out there don't need to promote the virtues of what they offer to people.
    ...
Campion: Very difficult to answer that question because there's so many practices out there that have different pricing structures.
    ...
Campion: Once again, I couldn't - I don't have the information to give you that answer.
    ...
Marie Campion, what's the future of this campaign? Let me just get Marie there - Marie Campion, what's the future of this campaign?

Campion: We've just launched the number one in numbers and we're saying that that is the DNA of the accounting category, and it's the core strength of chartered accountants, and we believe they are number one in numbers.

Valentine: All right, Marie, thanks very much for your time.

    Campion: Thank you, James.
    ...

The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia's general marketing manager, Marie Campion, did nothing to help her organisation's controversial campaign this week when she went on talkback radio and described potential clients as "the great unwashed".

So, why were the chartered accountants making out they were better than the certified practising ones?

Speaking on James Valentine's morning program on Sydney Radio ABC702 on Wednesday, Campion said: "There was some confusion in the marketplace that, you know, the great unwashed out there thought that there was only one accounting body or there's only one choice."
