Bill Campell, senior account executive with R.S. Business Machines and parent of a Sandusky High School student, said education without character is only doing half the job and the district's Character Counts program goes a long way in developing students' self-esteem.
The program highlights six "pillars" including respect, responsibility, citizenship, caring, trustworthiness and fairness. Each week, teachers and administration encourage different aspects of those pillars, such as courtesy, personal excellence, community service, compassion, honesty and equality.
"I'd rather have an employee with strong character that can be trained than one with strong experience and no character," Campbell said. "If we can reinforce (positive character traits) in a positive way that helps them see themselves in a more positive way, we're going to not only have better students but better citizens." -
