"The whole idea is that testing will predict the response of a patient to a drug before that drug is even administered," said William Campbell, director of genomics at Covance's Central Laboratories, located in Indianapolis. "The question is: Will the patient respond favorably or not? Will there be adverse reactions? We know that people vary in their responses to drugs, but we don't know how to predict how they will respond. That's the promise of pharmacogenetics-assuming individual response differences are based on genetics. The application for our clients is in drug development. We think we can build these variable responses into clinical trials and thereby save clients time and money."
Covance is banking on the prospect that identifying genetic variation during drug development will increase the success rate of new drugs in clinical trials and ultimately enhance a drug's market value. -
