   The road to success, though, is not without the proverbial bump in the road. The "bump" came in 1995 when American Longwall was purchased and Tony's company lost a major part of its subcontracting business. Further, he knew it would be difficult to find work in his expertise, longwall equipment. It was a debilitating blow, and it came at a time when the company had added 12,500 square feet to the manufacturing facility and 3,500 square feet to the main office.
   
   Still, Tony persevered and it paid dividends. As a result of the acquisition, several former American Longwall personnel who had lost their jobs, joined Longwall Associates to help form an OE longwall mining equipment company. So, the devastating negative hatched an absolute positive and everything started to fall into place for the young, energetic company.
   
   At the onset of the new OE venture in 1995, the company had three owners, in addition to Tony. The four owners had researched the situation and were strongly encouraged to start an OE company after talking with industry personnel. After two years, the three partners sold their interest to Tony. At this time, the company had operating equipment in several mines, including AEP Meigs Mine which had some of the most abrasive conditions worldwide. Tony remained steadfast to his dream and dedicated to his customers.
   
   Since 1997, the company has grown to add more buildings and to increase the staff to over 100 employees. The company's milestones have been numerous over the years: A recent expansion of over 5,800 square feet to the corporate office; an expansion of 3,500 square feet to the rotating components facility; an Australian branch of Longwall Associates with a facility in Mackay Queensland; and the addition of a shearing machine product line.
   
   What began as a dream in the mid-1980s, has become a reality in a span of two decades. Although the constant variable was Tony Campbell, the evolution of Longwall Associates has had many helping hands throughout the years.

   Tony gives as much as he gets. Employees at Longwall Associates have excellent benefits, including hospital, dental and eye care insurance, and a 401K profit-sharing plan. "We try to give them back as much as we can. We came from where they are, and we know what it means to earn that extra dollar. They are the ones who make this company."
   
   Born in Saltville, Virginia in1940, Tony had no coal background. He graduated from Saltville High School and from Victorville Junior College in Victorville, California, where he studied juvenile law. During his time at college, he worked part-time as a bread salesman, welder and inside a cement factory. He graduated from college in 1968, and worked odd jobs before returning to Chilhowie with his young bride, Josie, in 1977.
   
   Josie and Tony are the parents of three children, all of whom work at Longwall Associates, Inc. and all of whom will someday manage the company.

   Tony and Josie Campbell hosted a party at The Tavern in Abingdon Virginia to honor Ken's achievements and accomplishments while working for Longwall Associates, Inc.
   ...
   CEO Tony Campbell thanked Ken for his outstanding contributions to the company and the industry. Ken responded to the gratitude with his own appreciation. Ken spoke about his family, specifically his wife June. "During my 47 year career I traveled for about 20 of those years. That is a hell of a burden for my wife to have endured, and I thank her for her support." Additionally Ken thanked Tony for hiring him as sales manager for Longwall Associates, citing a revitalization of his passion, selling longwall mining equipment.
