In addition to several broken windows, the structure apparently has not had a whole roof since about 1999, when a microburst-type storm caused it to collapse, said Capt. Tony Campbell of the Wheeling Fire Department.
'There's been several fires there, but that's not why it's the way it is - the roof collapsed,' he said.
Campbell noted that without a roof to protect it, rain and weather in general worsened the condition of the already damaged building. He also believes that prior to the damage, a book store was located on the ground floor of the structure.
Crow said he believes Edgco Inc. of Lansing has been contracted by the owner to raze the building. He said work may begin this week or possibly next week.He does not believe it will be completed prior to Independence Day festivities at Heritage Port.
He also believes it may owned by a Wheeling resident. -

Capt. Tony Campbell, chief investigator for the Wheeling Fire Department, said that the department received the call to fight the fire at 1:03 p.m. Sunday.

The fire spread to the roof of the structure next door, causing minor destruction and smoke and water damage. The buildings are located about 3 feet apart.
