ob opportunities lured Teresa Nixon Campbell to California, where she now lives with her husband, Troy. Yet each December, warm thoughts of family gatherings, holiday baking and Christmas sharing beckon her home again.

"Our tradition - every year - is to watch 'A Christmas Story.' 'You'll shoot your eye out!'" Campbell said with a laugh, reciting the movie's most familiar line. "Poor little Ralphie. We've watched it at least 10 years in a row."

An actor and model, Campbell left Greenville in the late 1990s to pursue those career goals. Since that time, she has appeared in Broadway and off- Broadway productions, in TV shows and commercials.

After a recurring role in the 2002 season of "The Guardian," she temporarily dropped out of acting to help her husband launch his dream. Both Campbell, who is planning to return to the stage this year, and her husband, who is vice president at Lifeline Education Charter School in Compton, Ca., hold titles in their upstart company, Troyboy International (www.troyboyinternational.com). He is founder and president, and she is vice president of the company that designs and distributes urban fashions.

It's a ministry of sorts for Campbell and, particularly for her husband, who turned to the streets of Compton, Ca., for comfort after his parents' breakup when he was a kid. He turned his life around at age 22, and now works to keep other children from making the mistakes he did.

One of the goals of their company is to give back to that community, said Campbell, who lives in Long Beach, Ca.

"Our slogan is "No matter who you are, or where you come from ... you were born to win," she said.

The daughter of Edward and Helen Nixon of Simpsonville, Campbell has always been known locally for her determined spirit and natural acting ability.

But Campbell still takes a break each year to come home for the holidays - a time of sharing, laughing and relaxing. It's also a time, Campbell said, for enjoying holiday gatherings at her grandmother's home in the Lowcountry.

"We all get together, and Grandma tells us story after story; sometimes, the same ones we have already heard," Campbell said.

"My mom will say, ÔMa, you already told us that!' But that doesn't stop Grandma. She will just go right into another one.

"I love her so much," Campbell said.
