A native of Toronto, Tony Campbell received a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in biology, from McGill University in 1969. From 1969 until 1975 he was a Vice President of McLeod, Young, Weir, Ltd. in Canada. Mr. Campbell then joined First Boston Corporation as a Vice President of institutional sales. In 1984, he became a Principal and Managing Director of Berg Capital Corporation, a registered investment advisor, and also served as General Partner of Chelsea Partners, a private investment partnership. Mr. Campbell founded Ourson Partners in 1986.
One of Mr. Campbell's areas of expertise is short selling. His strategy is to seek out companies whose equity prices are significantly overvalued, and for which there is an identifiable catalyst to bring about a devaluation. He utilizes fundamental research, including financial statement analysis, customer, competitor and supplier checks and valuation analysis to seek out potential candidates for short selling based on l) fraud, 2) weakening industry trends or 3) stock multiples far in excess of market and industry norms. Mr. Campbell is one of fewer than twenty five professional short sellers in the country and this increases his opportunities of uncovering overvalued securities. -
