    As a point guard for Central Washington in the mid 1990s, Marc Callero first began thinking of himself as a head college coach. >

    On Monday, he'll realize that dream when he becomes the head men's basketball coach at South Puget Sound.

    "I've been preparing for this job since I played at Central," Callero said."I'm very excited.I don't see any reason why they can't be successful."

    Callero has coached at Foster and Mabton high schools, was a graduate assistant at Lake Erie College in Ohio and assisted at Highline for two years.For the past two seasons, he assisted former SPSCC coach Bill Mendelson at Pierce College.

    Callero said he likes running an up-tempo offense and pressure defense.

    "I like being the most aggressive team," Callero said."Everyone says they like their team to play hard.I want them to play harder."

    Callero is the 14th of 15 children in his family, grew up in Enumclaw and is the son of a doctor.Callero is an elementary education teacher and plans to continue teaching in Olympia with his wife.

    Callero's brother Joe is the men's basketball coach at Seattle University.Marc played for his brother when he coached at Highline Community College.

    Callero is the fifth coach in the Clippers' program, which began in 1992.
