Cal Poly welcomed Joe Callero to Mustang basketball on Friday.
In 36 hours, Callero went from the sleeper pick from Seattle to the man in control of the reins of the Mustangs.

"There's no way I'd be sitting in this chair if I didn't think we could be a Big West champion and get to the NCAA tournament and make a little bit of history here," said Callero during his welcome speech.
"The history I have is going into programs and making history and that's the exciting part of it and that's the goal we have here as a team."
Callero's previous team the last eight years was Seattle University.
There he rebuilt the program overseeing its transition from Division II to Division I.
He posted an overall 117-105 mark with five straight winning seasons.
Callero led the Redhawks to a last second win over Cal Poly in Mott Gym back in December.
During that visit, Callero said he discovered his Camelot.
"I saw the beach.
I saw the campus.
I saw the downtown and I got goose bumps.
I said this is a special place," recalled Callero.
When asked why he left Seattle for Cal Poly, Callero said he was ready for a new challenge in a place where the community embraces the athletic department.
"Here's another completely different atmosphere to do something that is another part of your dreams that say there's something unique and special about a college town that you can't create anywhere else," added Callero.
...
Callero signed a five year contract for $180,000 per year.
" He understands that we need to build a program and we're not building a one time team we're building a program to sustain itself," said Cone.
" We had great candidates and you can make a case for a number of people.
But at the end of the day I think Joe was the person for a lot of different reasons was the perfect fit for Cal Poly.
She added she wanted to keep his candidacy quiet because he was the only finalist who was already a Division I head coach.
Players met with Callero earlier on Friday.
They said they already believed Callero was the right man for the job.
...
- Prior to Seattle U, Callero coached two seasons at the University of Puget Sound where he went 22-25
- He was an assistant coach under Henry Bibby at USC
- He was a head coach for six years at Highline Community college posting a 130-49 record
