Cal State Fullerton (7-9) and UC Davis (7-9) were next in line, while the rebuilding process continues for the Cal Poly Mustangs, who are coming off a 3-13 conference record and welcome new coach Joe Callero.
    ...
CAL POLY - Coming off a three-win season in conference play, Cal Poly went out and signed Joe Callero to be its new head coach. Callero guided Seattle to a 21-8 record last year in the Redhawks' first year back on the Division I scene. But the Mustangs will need a whole lot more than a new coach. Two starters return from last year's team, though Callero is mostly focused on establishing a new identity.
    ...
Charles Anderson and David Hanson provide some depth at the wing, though Callero may be relying on a pair of 6-10 freshmen in the low post, where the Mustangs are clearly lacking.

Callero, 47, spent the last eight years as the head coach at Seattle University, where he compiled a 117-105 record. He led the Redhawks transition to Division I. In 2007, he led them to the program's first NCAA Division II Tournament berth in 38 years.

Seattle scored a last second one point win at Cal Poly back in December in the first ever meeting between the schools.

Previously, Callero was the head coach at the University of Puget Sound for two seasons posting a 22-25 mark. He also served as an assistant under Henry Bibby at USC for one season.

Cal Poly welcomed Joe Callero to Mustang basketball on Friday.

In 36 hours, Callero went from the sleeper pick from Seattle to the man in control of the reins of the Mustangs.
    ...
"There's no way I'd be sitting in this chair if I didn't think we could be a Big West champion and get to the NCAA tournament and make a little bit of history here," said Callero during his welcome speech. "The history I have is going into programs and making history and that's the exciting part of it and that's the goal we have here as a team."

Callero's previous team the last eight years was Seattle University.

There he rebuilt the program overseeing its transition from Division II to Division I.

He posted an overall 117-105 mark with five straight winning seasons.

Callero led the Redhawks to a last second win over Cal Poly in Mott Gym back in December.

During that visit, Callero said he discovered his Camelot. "I saw the beach. I saw the campus. I saw the downtown and I got goose bumps. I said this is a special place," recalled Callero.

When asked why he left Seattle for Cal Poly, Callero said he was ready for a new challenge in a place where the community embraces the athletic department.

"Here's another completely different atmosphere to do something that is another part of your dreams that say there's something unique and special about a college town that you can't create anywhere else," added Callero.
    ...
Callero signed a five year contract for $180,000 per year.

" He understands that we need to build a program and we're not building a one time team we're building a program to sustain itself," said Cone. " We had great candidates and you can make a case for a number of people. But at the end of the day I think Joe was the person for a lot of different reasons was the perfect fit for Cal Poly. She added she wanted to keep his candidacy quiet because he was the only finalist who was already a Division I head coach.

Players met with Callero earlier on Friday.

They said they already believed Callero was the right man for the job.
