The event was created as a way to celebrate the victories, said Dr. Mike Callaghan, Portneuf Medical Center's oncology director.

"We've had really great support from the hospital, business community and private physicians' offices," Callaghan said.

Sindie Jones, another breast cancer survivor said the number of people attending the picnic is encouraging.

"It is great, it shows that the research and development is working," she said.

Dr. Michael Callaghan, Portneuf Medical Center radiology oncologist and medical director of Cancer Services, said data collected by the National Cancer Institute from every hospital in the nation indicates that not only is the incidence of cancer decreasing, but people are living longer and more are cured.
    ...
More current numbers are unavailable because data is still being collected, but Callaghan said the survival rate is likely increasing rapidly.

This is happening because of earlier detection.

"When you find someone with early stage cancer it is easier to cure them," he said.

Survival rates for stage four cancer are very low, because it has usually spread throughout a person's body.In contrast, stage one cancer has a 90 percent survival rate.

But these are general figures, Callaghan pointed out.People can sometimes live long and relatively healthy lives after being diagnosed with a late stage cancer.
