Participants must also commit to saving $80 a month, and meeting once a month for five months for a financial literacy workshop, said Maureen Callaghan, a homelessness community worker for the district.

“Their $400 can become a $1,200 contribution from us so they would have a total of $1,600 toward that housing goal,†said Callaghan.

“Part of it will be them talking about whatever challenges they have had that month in terms of trying to meet their savings goal,†said Callaghan.
Callaghan thinks financial literacy could be useful for many people.

“It allowed (participants) to move out of the shelter system faster than anyone ever expected,†said Callaghan.

The first session should start in the third week in June, said Callaghan.

Callaghan hopes the program will help people access affordable housing, but also make some life changes.
“Once they are into a new apartment, hopefully they will be able to maintain the tenancy because of the skills and the information they have gathered from this program,†said Callaghan.
Participants do not have to be affiliated with any organization to apply for the program.
