Andrew Cajka, president of Southern Hospitality Group who sits on a state committee that oversees hotel tax spending, said the political maneuvers won't stop unless the council takes the advice of its expert panel more seriously.

A proposal to require a two-thirds council majority to overturn the panel's recommendations failed by a 6-6 vote this week when Councilwoman Lottie Gibson broke with her usual allies and voted against the measure because she said she wanted to be different.
    ...
Still, Cajka said hotel room calculations some council members used this week to justify more funding for the Scottish Games were way off. The advisory panel had recommended $15,000 for the games as one of six top-tier events getting the same amount.
    ...
Cajka and Councilman Jim Burns said that is what the hotel tax money is for - luring visitors - and that it's not designed to sustain the operations of local events.

Andrew Cajka, president of Southern Hospitality Group who is active in state and local tourism, said after the debate that the council again looked past its appointed experts and questioned the role of Councilman Joe Dill in proposing more money for the Scottish Games since he serves as the event's chairman.

"They didn't fix it," he said. "It's still going to be politicized every year."

Dill said he served as the event's honorary chairman last year but no longer fills the role. He said the point of the council rule changes was to get past such questions and make future funding more predictable based on the hotel business local festivals actually generate.
