Brian Cain, vice president and general manager of Cain Toyota BMW, said the dealership has to expand to keep up with its customer base and the new products BMW has planned.
JACKSON TWP.The market for luxury cars has remained fairly solid, despite the slumbering economy, but that's only half the reason Cain Toyota BMW will invest millions to double its space.
BMW, the German automaker known for luxury and engineering, plans to add a number of new models by 2004.
...
"We want to be a part of that," said Brian Cain, vice president and general manager.
Sales of high-priced cars such as Jaguar and Land Rover rose 92 and 149 percent in the first half of the year, according to the Cleveland Automobile Dealers Association, which represents dealers in Stark County.
Lexus' sales also were up here, as were Saab's, and Mercedes Benz posted its best half-year ever.
...
"Consumer confidence," Cain said, especially the volatility of the stock market "has a huge effect on our customers."
The lot at 6527 Whipple Ave. NW is 3.5 acres.Cain has purchased another 4 acres just to the south, where the dealership will make a multimillion dollar investment in a BMW center (BMW doesn't call them dealerships).
Target date for completion is April 1, 2004.That's also the year when the automaker will have a number of new products on the market.
Planned are an X3, a smaller SUV than the present X5, and the return of the 6 series, a larger coupe made in the 1980s.
Likely to have the biggest impact will be a new 1 series - smaller, entry-level cars priced between $20,000 and $30,000.
...
The lowest-priced BMW now is the 325, which is in the $30,000 range, Cain said.He also said the new cars will compete for Volkswagen's share of the market.
"With all the new products coming out, it just makes sense" to expand, Cain said."We've got to be part of it."
Even with business flat this year, "our customer base is growing," and after two years of solid gains, "we're busting at the seams."
The present facility will become Toyota only, leaving more showroom space for trucks or certified used cars, while the new building will be dedicated to BMW and have the same advantages, Cain said.
"We'll be able to take care of our customers better."
The expansion will allow Cain to carry more new and used cars in both lines.
"You gotta have 'em to sell 'em," Cain said."Our hands are tied when we don't have that many to select from."
And that affects BMWs more than Toyotas.Cain said the dealership sells about 17 BMWs and 75 Toyotas each month.
He also said having the two facilities as stand-alone dealerships will give them a higher priority with the automakers.
The Whipple Avenue store is Cain's third.
