Brian Cain, a spokesman for Chevron Phillips Chemical Co., calls that a "misconception."

For example, he said, polyethylene fuel tanks weigh up to 30 percent less than comparable steel tanks but are safer because they don't create sparks in collisions.

And they can deform and regain their original shape, thus absorbing shock from impact.

Polypropylene is used in vehicle bumpers because of its ability to absorb the energy of a collision, he said.

The relocations will be to Bartlesville's Plastic Technology Center, while other personnel may be redeployed elsewhere in the company, spokesman Brian Cain said.

"We don't know how many that will be," he added.

Chevron Phillips, a 50-50 joint venture started in 2000 by ConocoPhillips and Chevron Corp., researches and produces high-density polyethylene for pipes, milk jugs and many other uses. The division's manufacturing center will remain in Orange, Cain noted.

Both the tech center and the plant sustained damage during the hurricane season. The manufacturing facility is being restored for a planned December reopening, while the storm damage played a role in moving the technology center to Bartlesville.

"The relocation of OTC (Orange Technology Center) is something that has been considered for some time, but the hurricane damage did factor into that decision," Cain said.
