Singer-songwriter and guitarist Brett Cain, a 1996 graduate of Brooke High School, will make his national television debut on the program, which will be broadcast at 7 p.m. on local WB stations.
,It's pretty exciting stuff going on here,, said Cain, who began his musical career playing in clubs in the Weirton and Wheeling areas.
Cain described the program as a cross between ,The Ed Sullivan Show,, ,Star Search, and ,The Gong Show.,
,They have some acts that are really bad, and some that are really good,, he said, adding a 500-pound belly dancer and a woman who plays the flute with her nose were among those appearing on the same program as he.
Billed on the show as ,the Scat Man from the Streets,, Cain said his performance was more straight-forward, but still somewhat off-beat.
He was asked to improvise a jazz-style rendition of ,Traveler,, one of about 25 songs he's written.
A studio audience determines, through its level of applause, which of the performers will return for the next program.
Those who don't like to know the endings of television programs or movies before they see them should skip the following sentence.Cain was happy to report he will be returning for the show's Sept. 19 episode, for which he's scheduled to perform another of his songs.
Cain said he enjoyed meeting Harvey, who achieved success as a stand-up comic and star of a WB sitcom bearing his name, and was surprised to learn the star is from Welch, W.Va.
Cain said during the show Harvey ,was giving West Virginia props,, meaning he had positive things to say about the Mountain State.
Cain added when Harvey learned he also was a West Virginia native, the comic told him, ,so you're one of the good old boys.,
Cain said he also appears on the show's Web site and in commercials for Sunday's program.
Cain has been striving for such exposure since he moved to Los Angeles a couple of years ago.
He also was one of 20 finalists appearing on a radio version of ,American Idol, staged on a Los Angeles radio show hosted by ,American Idol, emcee Ryan Secrist.
Cain said he was among about 1,000 performers who submitted videos of themselves to enter the contest.
Harvey and Secrist aren't the only stars Cain has encountered.
...
Cain said though his role was a small, non-speaking part, it's hard to miss him.
,I'm the big white bartender,, he said.
It was hardly Cain's first brush with acting, though. With his large frame and versatility at playing comic and dramatic roles, Cain was a memorable cast member of many productions at Brooke High School, Brooke Hills Playhouse and West Liberty State College, where he earned a degree in theatre arts.
,All of my training was around here,, he said.
Cain said of appearing in a movie, ,It was a lot like being on stage, but it took an extremely long time to shoot just a little bit of film.,
Cain, who returned home for the Labor Day weekend, said he loves the beach and warm weather in California, but isn't enamored of everything out west.
Sometimes the state can be a little too crowded for his taste, he said, and the cost of living is higher.
,It's $2.35 a gallon for gas,, he said.
And Cain hasn't forgotten his roots.
