Brenda Cain, a physical therapist and clinical director of Forrest General Hospital's rehabilitation unit, said age isn't a factor in the recovery process but said she has noticed stroke rehab patients appear to be younger and younger.
"I've been doing this for 13 years and every year, especially the last five years, the stroke victims are much younger," she said.

"Usually with neurological problems like strokes, we want to do as much past specific-oriented functions as possible," Cain said.

Cain said she could see Jones' determination because she exceeded her goals during treatment.
Cain, who played basketball with Jones at the University of Southern Mississippi, said the demanding college regimen taught them the value of hard work.

"When she came in, she wasn't walking, and when she went home, she had a cane, but after a week or so at home, she didn't use the cane," Cain said."We were a part of a team that was demanding and tough, and I know we both learned a tough work ethic from there."
Jones had several deficits in her arm and leg and a severe problem with her eye and optic nerve, Cain said.
