Jasper Police Chief Bobby Cain says it was good police work that led them to the drugs and money."During the investigation, one of those officers was a k-9 officer, and the drug dog alerted on the trailer," says Chief Cain.
The contraband was in a hidden compartment in the trailer.Cain says this is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, marijuana busts ever inside the city limits."They were paying attention to what they should be and this guy was stopped for a traffic violation," Cain says of his officers.
The search and seizure happened near the Alabama Highway 118 exit on "Corridor X. Chief Cain says it started from a routine traffic stop. The reason for the stop - the trailer had no lights.
With the future opening of "Corridor X", or I-22 as it will be known, Chief Cain says they expect more of these types of busts."You know, there's a lot of traffic that comes through there.Drugs are transported everyday up and down the highways. It's probably one of the many to come," he says.
The DEA has been informed of the investigation and Chief Cain says they're waiting to hear if the Feds will participate.
Cain says the suspect hasn't been Identified yet because the trafficking charges against him haven't been filed.Cain says that should happen Thursday morning.
