Capitals Sign Defenseman Trevor Byrne
WASHINGTON, D.C. , The Washington Capitals have signed free agent defenseman Trevor Byrne, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.

Byrne, 26, scored three goals last season and set career highs with 18 assists and 31 points while playing 51 games for the Peoria Rivermen of the American Hockey League (AHL).He has spent the previous three seasons playing in the St. Louis Blues system for their top development clubs in Worcester (Mass.) and Peoria.He has recorded 11 goals and 37 assists for 48 points in 154 AHL games and in that span also played 41 games in the ECHL for Peoria and Wheeling (W.Va.)
Byrne was originally selected by St. Louis in the fifth round, 143rd overall, of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft.The 6'3", 205-pound native of Weymouth, Mass., graduated from Dartmouth College, where he played four seasons and was a three-time selection to the All-Eastern College Athletic Conference Second Team.Byrne led all Big Green defensemen in scoring as sophomore with 26 points and was second among defenseman in scoring as a freshman, junior and senior.
