The AmeriCorps program , initiated by the Clinton Administration to connect education and community service , according to Linda Byrd , national director for communities of shalom , provides a stipend for participants or they may receive money toward their educational expenses , comparable to a work-study program. The communities of Shalom program was created after the 1992 Los Angeles riots to bring about collaboration between church and government , public and private sectors to benefit people of marginalized neighborhoods. { 271 }.

Black Clergywomen of the United Methodist Church ( BCWUMC ) met here for the first time and began developing strategies to deal with the many justice issues they face in the church.The organization is the result of a 1988 consultation and creation of an African-American Clergywoman's Steering Committee led by Bishop Leontine Kelly.
