John Byford of the British Library, and Secretary of the Library and Information Co-operation Council (LINC) NEWSPLAN Panel, warmly welcomed the success of the HLF bid, emphasising as he did so the distinctively collaborative nature of the NEWSPLAN programme, which involves academic, national, and public libraries all over the UK in tandem with a strongly supportive newspaper industry.He described the programme as 'a major contribution to lifelong learning and opening up access to unique UK heritage materials'.

As David Ruse (LASER NEWSPLAN Chair and Assistant Director for Leisure and Libraries of Westminster City Council) and John Byford (British Library) announced, results from the survey will be used to inform policy and strategy for NEWSPLAN into the future.

Finally, former Newspaper Librarian, John Byford, and Christopher Skelton-Foord, Reading Rooms & Information Services Manager, met earlier this year with three senior officials from the Bangladeshi Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs and a Foreign and Commonwealth Office official to provide possible guidance on surrogate and electronic storage of information whilst the Bangladesh Library is preparing to introduce new technologies, and to demonstrate the Newspaper Library's current CD-ROM and Internet facilities.
