    David Byerman, Chief Government Liaison for Nevada for the United States Department of Commerce, said he came to talk about the Census, and to give an update of what is happening state wide and in Pahrump.

    Mr. Byerman said that power and money are the factors concerned with the Census.Dave Byerman stated that 182 billion dollars a year are allocated based on census figures.Mr. Byerman reported that Nevada has not been getting their fair share due to being undercounted in 1990.Nevada has the fifth worse response rate Dave Byerman said.However, many changes have taken place within the past ten years.Mr. Byerman said the way he felt the census should be handled was like a campaign.Dave Byerman reported that Nevada has the second best improvement in census response rates in the entire country.

    Dave Byerman said he would be in this area for the next several weeks due to concerns of Pahrump being undercounted.Mr. Byerman stated that on June 12, the Field Follow-up Process will begin.This is a quality control program to deal with deletions, vacant properties, and those that have been missed in the first count.Dave Byerman explained that an eight hundred number previously used for employment purposes has been turned into a "hey you missed me" hotline.The number is 888-325-7733.These calls will be forwarded to the North Las Vegas Census Office and they will send someone out to physically look at your residence.Mr. Byerman stated that Pahrump is one of his main concerns in the State.Dave Byerman reported that most of the concerns being voiced are well founded and wants the public to understand it is all being taken very seriously.

    David Byerman, U.S. Department of Commerce shared the reasons the census is so important.If one family is missed the loss is approximately $25,000 for the ten years until the next census.Mr. Byerman stressed that the information collected by the census is confidential for 72 years.He shared that the Department of Commerce is hiring and if anyone is interested they should call 775-784-7400.The age limit is 16 or 18 depending upon the position.It is extremely important that a good job is done this year in taking the census.Mr. Byerman stressed that is important that everyone complete the census forms.He shared that there are two forms, one long and one long.If anyone happens to receive the long form it is important that the individual fill it out.He also stated that an individual does not have to be a citizen to take part in the census.
