Strong support from voters on the west side of Burlington translated into primary triumphs for Burlington City Councilman David Huffman and challengers Joe Barbour and Jim Butler.
...
Butler, a political newcomer, was the favorite of voters who live in the neighborhoods off Edgewood Avenue near South Church Street that make up the Central Boone precinct.Butler, the vice president of Stevenson Vestal, a window furnishings company, snagged 193 votes in the precinct.
Strong spending and a strong turnout from supporters help account for his showing, Butler said.
"I was extremely satisfied with the turnout we had, particularly in my corner."
Through Sept. 24, Butler raised $6,385 in contributions.
...
Butler spent $2,182.50 on advertising, including just over $2,000 to the Times-News.
None of the other council candidates raised or spent $3,000 on the primary, the threshold to report contributions and spending under state campaign finance laws.
Butler was the 2006 campaign chairman for the United Way of Alamance County and is the 2007 board chairman for the North State Council of the Boy Scouts of America.Butler said such activities, coupled with his pro-business positions and voter-dissatisfaction with the city council, also helped propel him into the general election.
