Biography: Jill Butler was educated at Tunbridge Wells County Grammar School and St Hugh's College Oxford.
She followed a career in teaching at St Paul's Girls' School (1961-1964), the London School of Economics (1971-1974) and then at Alleyn's School where she taught Mathematics for 25 years during which the school became fully co-educational.
She was the first woman Housemaster (Brown's House), and her daughter, Nell, was in the second entry of girls in Year 7.
She now has a grand daughter in the Reception class of the Junior School.
In 1998 her husband Lord Butler of Brockwell was appointed to be Master of University College, Oxford which meant moving from Herne Hill.
