"A lot of times during football games people use them to meet up with each other," said Jessica Butler, marketing manager with Iowa Wireless of Urbandale.

Butler said Iowa Wireless uses Global System for Mobile Communications, a digital wireless standard that digitally encodes voices with a unique encoder that emulates the characteristics of human speech.
"GSM allows us to accommodate more people than other wireless carriers," she said.
Even during football games, GSM usually can handle the call volume, Butler said.
"When you have a sudden surge of population, for instance when 70,000 people come to Iowa City during a football game, it puts all wireless companies in a difficult position," she said."But we have not had a lot of trouble with that traffic.According to our customers, during the Iowa-Iowa State game, we were one of the only wireless carriers that was able to get calls through during the game."
Butler said GSM has been the standard used in Europe since the beginning of wireless communication.
"It was developed to handle higher caller capacity, so Iowa Wireless chose to use it because we saw how successful Europe was with it," she said."And we are always in the process of improving our network."
Other cell phone companies deal with busy call times by bringing in extra equipment.
