"The recipe for the shortbread cookie is actually based on the original recipe ... sold in the 1920s," said Deborah Butcher, director of communications for the local Penn Laurel Girl Scout Council.

Butcher said they're a perennial and her personal favorite.
"But I also like the Reduced Fat Lemon Pastry Cremes," she admitted.
For decades, the Shortbreads, Thin Mints and Peanut Butter Sandwiches (known to middle-aged folks as Do-si-dos) have been considered by Girl Scouts as the "mandatory" three cookies to sell, although different types come and go.Some are quickly phased out, others are brought back year after year.
Next month, in addition to the Big Three and the lemon cookies, Girl Scouts will also be selling Peanut Butter Patties (Tagalongs), Caramel deLites (Samoas), Animal Treasures (square fudge-dipped shortbreads) and a brand-new offering Piatas.
Butcher describes Piatas as oatmeal-based cookies that are iced on the bottom, filled with strawberry jam and "finished off with swizzles of sugar glaze and cinnamon-crumb topping."
They're very sweet.

Butcher said the Girl Scouts who number 31/2 million nationwide will take orders from Jan. 2 to Jan. 25; cookies will be delivered in early March. The Penn Laurel Girl Scout Council is comprised of more than 21,000 girls and serves seven counties, including York.
"We try to sell over a million boxes of cookies within our council," she said.

Butcher said people approach her about cookies all the time.
"People always say, We never order enough.' So I always tell them the great thing about Girl Scout cookies is they freeze really, really well," she said.
