The bomb was taken to the police department's shooting range about 9 a.m. Monday, where Ashtabula County Special Weapons and Tactics team sniper/sharpshooter Jim Burton, shot at it with a high-powered rifle, causing it to detonate.

Burton is a deputy with the Ashtabula County Sheriff's Department, which helped with the multi-jurisdictional investigation.

"I've had people in that trailer with (images of) people shooting at them and me yelling at them and they can't reload," said Jim Burton, a retired Sacramento County sheriff's deputy who supervises the training.

Burton's goal: to make the exercises as stressful as possible.

"I want your adrenaline up," he told the officers gathered at the training site.
