That credit could be in a Grade 10 or Grade 11 phys-ed course, or it could take the form of a full-credit dance class, fitness leadership course, or locally developed physical activity course approved by the Department of Education, said Jim Burton, the province's director of regional education services based in Sydney.
The phys-ed requirement will cause school boards to phase out PAL/CALM classes, which are a half-credit course that is only one-half physical activity.
PAL is an acronym for physically active lifestyles, and CALM stands for career and life management.
Although one credit in phys-ed will be required, students must take at least five elective credits over three years, so students could take more than one in phys-ed, said Burton.
However, he added, there is no talk of making phys-ed mandatory in Grades 10, 11 and 12.
The other electives may be needed for a wide variety of other courses.
