"The sleeping giants in Southern Baptist churches are our laymen," said Jim Burton, team leader for the mission education team at the North American Mission Board. "The Bigger Breakfast is Southern Baptists' opportunity to gather our men and discover - or for many churches to rediscover - the synergy that can come from their focus on missions."

Burton said Southern Baptists will focus on missions action - both in their communities and beyond - during the breakfast.

"The emphasis on the Royal Ambassador Centennial last year may have contributed to this upswing," said Jim Burton, team leader for mission education at the North American Mission Board in Alpharetta, Ga. "We heard from many churches in 2008 that realized they needed to re-prioritize teaching boys about missions and developing men to be their leaders."

The 2008 ACP statistics represent two consecutive years of positive growth in the number of those participating in the Baptist Men and RA ministries in SBC churches -- the longest period of sustained growth over the last decade, Burton said.

"We celebrate this evidence of churches prioritizing the development of men and boys in missions. Historically, we know the best indicator of children maintaining their family's faith tradition as adults is the example of their fathers," Burton said.

"We're convinced we won't have clarity of purpose and mission in our churches without a genuine movement of God," said Jim Burton, NAMB's mission education team leader. "There's no resource we can create that can replace a genuine movement of God among men, so that's what Baptist men will be praying for in January."

Burton said state mission education leaders affirmed the idea to mobilize Southern Baptist men in prayer at the 2008 NAMB Mission Education Roundtable in New Orleans.

"We need to pray that God will do a work among the men of our churches," Burton said.
