    James H. Burton
    ...
James H. Burton, 52, Wyomissing, is CEO of Child Guard, Lancaster, the manufacturer and distributor of a new child-safety device for firearms.

Burton's latest investment was prompted by statistics from the National Safe Kids Campaign which said 4.7 million children are living in households with firearms that are always or sometimes kept loaded and unsecured.

"Equally alarming is the fact that 64 percent of suicide victims in the 10-to-24 age group use a firearm," Burton said."We recognized that a solution was needed and so we introduced the Child Guard CS-100, child-safety device for firearms."

Burton said he has formed Hybrid Ventures, a group of seven Pennsylvania investors who invest in socially minded businesses or green technology.

"When we saw the prototype for this device developed by a Pittsburgh inventor, we bought control and finished the design," he said."Last year we moved the company headquarters from Pittsburgh to Lancaster.

"Out of 32 firearm-safety devices tested by the Consumer Safety Products Council â€" only two passed," he said.

Burton said one of the unique design features of the CS-100 is the movable safety posts which allow the owner to fit the unit to their specific firearm and to remove the safety device from the gun in a matter of seconds.

"The device is undefeatable with common household tools," Burton said."The stronger-than-steel tungsten carbide skeleton assures exceptional strength and cut resistance."

"We are developing a second generation of Child Guard by creating a four-push button code," Burton said.
